The Treehouse Observatory
A whimsical observatory in the trees, our treehouse observatory rises from a rhododendron patch to give wonderful, elevated views of the stars.
Accessed via a magical staircase of floating oak sleepers with a rope handrail, the Treehouse Observatory obeys the first rule of treehouses: it’s all about the entrance! Built on pilotis mounted on discrete concrete pads, the observatory is elevated to give views above the surrounding trees, turning average horizons into stunning wide views of the night sky.
To give a true treehouse feel, we used cedar shingles for the walls, and on the marvellous sliding pyramid roof. These have blended in to the surroundings as they’ve weathered in the years since installation, ensuring the observatory has almost disappeared into its surroundings.
Pyramid Roof
What do you call a square hipped roof? A pyramid roof of course! If you’re thinking about a square observatory (say a 6×6′ or 7×7′) a pyramid roof is a great option for ensuring the lowest possible nightlines in all directions. Our lightweight tile options and cedar shingles mean we can keep the pitch super-low too, guaranteeing great views all around. Hipped and pyramid roofs are also very strong but light weight – making rolling easier too.
